Should Canadian Government continue to give CERB?
- Government is tracking down 2019 income and comparing the 2020 tax year.
- Government is also checking on the efforts of trying to find the jobs since 2020 onwards and where.
- People who have shown that they worked previously on cash will have their employer to still give them T4.
- Government officials drafted a bill as a deterrent stating that Canadians who make fraudulent claims for CERB could face a fine of up to $5,000, and jail time.
The current penalty will be to pay it back; and false claims will be considered fraud, a chargeable offence through the criminal code. Canada Revenue also indicated that those who falsely filed for CERB would be discovered when they file taxes next year.
It only took two weeks, and the CRA had over 200,000 files flagged for investigation from the snitch line.
Committing any of them will land a person a fine of up to $5,000 “plus an amount of not more than double the amount of the income support payment that was or would have been paid as a result of committing the offence.”
They could also get hit with the fine of up to $5,000 plus up to six months in jail.
